Two matching numbers touch, they become one bigger number. That is the entire rule, and it is enough to eat an afternoon. Reaching the 2048 tile is the classic goal, but the board keeps going as long as you have a legal move, so the real question is what you can build after that.

How to play

• Every swipe pushes all tiles to that wall, and equal neighbours merge into their sum.
• A new 2 or 4 drops in after each move that changes the board.
• The run ends when no direction can move or merge anything.

Tips from the people who built it

• Pick one corner and keep your biggest tile there for the whole run. Most losses start when it wanders.
• Only swipe in three directions. The fourth — usually up — is what breaks your corner.
• Merge the small stuff along an edge before it clutters the middle of the board.
